MARCH 2010 - Note: This is an ONLINE ONLY Edition

Letter from the President

I would like to begin by saying farewell to the past Board of Directors, thank them for their unselfish dedication and commitment to the Emerald Society and welcome the new 2010-2011 Board of Directors. Our first Board meeting provided a room full of fresh faces filled with enthusiasm and desire to create a successful and prosperous upcoming term. We have established an exciting agenda for the upcoming year and are moving to first and foremost enhance our membership. I would like to focus on achieving the goal of increasing our membership to what is was in the past and hope to encourage Irish Officers to “Continue the Tradition” and join and support the Emerald Society of Illinois. Participating in Emerald Society events will create lifelong friendships amongst members and their families, traditions will be established and past on from generation to  generation and pride in our heritage continues. That is and will be the number one focus of my term as President. I would ask that each and every member brings at least one new member into the organization this year and introduce them the rich tradition and pride shared among Irish Police Officers within the Emerald Society of Illinois.

Hope to see all of you at our upcoming events. We are promising a year where this Board will work as hard as it can to increase our membership, provide many fun filled meetings, and promote Irish Culture and pride in all Officers of Irish Ancestry in Law Enforcement in the State of Illinois. Without participation of our membership we will not be able to achieve this goal. We hope to see many new faces among our familiar members and watch the Emerald Society flourish.

Go mbeannai Dra duit,

(May God bless You)

Debbie O’Connor-Dimaggio

President

January Meeting/Chili Cook-off

This year has already enjoyed a successful Chili Cook-off in January. Our talented Emerald Society Chef’s Tom Cody and Rick Toolis whipped up there own secret recipe chili and we had 5 solid entries for the competition. We had one Celebrity Chef and two semi-celebrity chefs. (Past President Kevin Taylor and new Director Larry Benner). The entries were all delicious and the judges chose the following winners:

1st Place- Denise Casey-Chicago PD

2nd Place- Larry Nowak-retired Arlington Heights PD

3rd Place- Debbie O’Connor-Dimaggio-Chicago PD

Thanks again to all of our judges and congratulations to our winners. A good time was enjoyed by all.

February Traveling Meeting

Our February Meeting was at a new location. We held the meeting at the Irish American Heritage Center. We decided to try a Thursday night for a few reasons, but mostly to allow the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society-Chicago Police Department to join us. The Irish Heritage Center was a great choice, Executive Director Tim McDonnell saw to all of our needs.  The Pipes and Drums practiced in the beautiful and newly decorated grand ballroom. The Emerald Society meeting was held in the 5th Province, the pizzas were delicious from Marie’s Pizza. To our member’s pleasure, the Pipes and Drums of the Emerald Society-Chicago Police Department played few tunes, and we would again like to thank them. They also remembered our former Emerald Society 1stVice President Jimmy O’Connell. Jim was a dedicated member of the Emerald Society and the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society-Chicago Police Department. Jim passed away in January after a short and extremely courageous battle with cancer. Jimmy was loved by all who had the pleasure of  knowing him. He was described by his friend and fellow piper Ed Kane as “the Best of the Best”. He will be sorely missed by his Emerald Society family. We all raised a pint to our good friend Jimmy as the band played Amazing Grace in his honor. I would at this time like to share a story about Jimmy O’Connell which was written by our Past President Kevin Taylor:

"Because I Was There" -- A Tribute to the Original "Midnight Piper," Jimmy O'Connell

Each year during National Police Week, a lone bagpiper appears at midnight at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, to play a tribute to the fallen heroes engraved on the Memorial's walls. Sadly, we must report that the original "Midnight Piper," Jimmy O'Connell, passed away earlier this week after a battle with brain cancer.  Reflecting on his death, NLEOMF Chairman and CEO Craig Floyd, said, “One of my favorite moments every year during National Police Week is the 'Midnight Piper.' Many of us gather at the Memorial late at night and out of the quiet darkness steps the Midnight Piper to pay a solemn tribute to the 18,661 fallen heroes whose names grace the Memorial walls. Jimmy was the original Midnight Piper, and we are so grateful to him for this wonderful tradition that will now live on in his memory.”

Below is a tribute written by Kevin Taylor, past president of the Emerald Society of Illinois, entitled “Because I Was There,” honoring the life of Jim O'Connell and explaining the amazing origins of the “Midnight Piper".

On my first trip to Washington, D.C. for Police Week I was with Jim & Kelly O'Connell. Upon arrival in DC Jim and Kelly promptly headed over to the FOP hospitality area, and I told them I would meet them there because I was going to go to the Memorial. I had planned on paying my respects to my partner, Richard Clark, who had been killed in the line of duty. When I arrived at the Memorial, I looked up his name in the book, but when it came time to enter the Memorial itself I suddenly became overwhelmed with guilt over his death. I just could not bring myself to enter the Memorial, so I walked over to meet Jim and Kelly at the FOP. When I finally located Jim, he wanted to know how things went. I told him it was too difficult to go, and I would try again a little later. We eventually made it back to our hotel for dinner.

When we headed back towards the FOP, I decided to try again and headed to the Memorial to give it another try. Unfortunately, I was met with the same results. When I caught up with the O’Connell’s, they again asked how everything went. I told them that maybe we could all go together the next day, and I would probably have better luck. Later that same evening Jim had played his bagpipes with some other pipers at the FOP and we were all just kind of hanging out together. Just before midnight that night Jim O'Connell found me in the crowd. He grabbed me by the arm and said, "Come with me." I asked where we were going and he said, "I'm going to the Memorial, and I'm going to play the pipes for your partner and if you don't come in there then, then I give up!!"

We headed to the Memorial with Ed Kane (Pipe Major, Illinois ES) and both wives. Jim waited for me to find Rich's panel on the wall. He then walked to the center of the Memorial and began playing the bagpipes. He then walked to where I was standing and played Amazing Grace with Ed Kane playing (unplanned) seconds off in the distance. When we all rejoined again, we were crying. Jim O'Connell then said, "What an Honor it was to do that," and that as long as he has air in his lungs he will play the pipes at the Memorial at midnight every time he is in DC. It was purely coincidental that this occurred right at midnight. The name, "The Midnight Piper," was actually coined by the St. Paul Minnesota Emerald Society -- and they didn't even know it.  We met Layne Lodmell (Minnesota Emerald Society) and company the next night.  We were enjoying a beverage at the FOP and talking with them. Just before midnight they began checking their watches saying they didn't want to be late. We asked them what they were talking about. They said they didn't want to be late for "The Midnight Piper." Jim and I just looked at each other, smiled and asked, "What's The Midnight Piper?"  They then went on to explain that one of the members of their group had two brothers on the wall. They had all gone to the Memorial the night before and that at midnight a bagpiper started playing and then ended his performance with Amazing Grace. They said that all of the people visiting the Memorial at that time had broken into tears and by the time anyone had regained their composure, the bagpiper and his friends had left.

Jimmy O'Connell (Illinois Emerald Society) made it a point to fulfill his original promise to play a tribute at midnight in memory of Chicago PD Ofc. Richard Clark, EOW April 3, 1986. Panel 19-W: 9, a tradition that has been going on since 1994.

Rest in Peace, Midnight Piper. You will be missed ... but you will always be remembered.

Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his wife Kelly and to all of Jim’s family.

2010 St. Patrick’s Day Parade March & Celebration

We anxiously await the coming of what we have come to know as “The High Holy Days of the Emerald Society”. This years Event Chairman is our current past President, Patrick J. Moriarty. Pat has a firm grip on things and the committee has a fun filled day planned. We have secured a new and exciting venue for this years St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Our friends at Local 399 (Operating Engineers) have allowed us to rent their Hall for our event. The facility is 2 years old, beautiful inside, with 1st class amenities and room for a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration that will be second to none! The Hall is located at 2260 S. Grove St. (22nd & Canal) Grove St. is ¼ block west of Canal St. There is free parking for 240 + vehicles and the area is in central but very private location on the Chicago River with a great view of the city. The building has multiple restrooms with changing areas for those who want to do so. The main hall is equipped with state of the art audio and visual equipment which we will utilize throughout the event. Through much hard work and planning we have kept the entry prices the same as last year’s celebration: $30.00 for adults 21 and over, $15.00 for persons under 21 and children 12 and under are free. Officers are encouraged to march proudly in your department uniform, as it is one of the few times we are cheered as we walk the street! Members marching in uniform will be admitted to the celebration for $20.00. We will be serving a full corned beef and cabbage dinner with all the trimmings and hot dogs for the kids. Chicago Beverage will be delivering a continual supply of libations for your enjoyment. A full service counter will be available for a small individual cost. We also have a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza available at a rate of $99.00.  This is an unbelievable rate that was offered to us. Contact the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza for further information. We will also have cabs available at the Hall for hire.

London Metropolitan Police Welcome Party

We were contacted by the London Metropolitan Police Departments Emerald Society early on in the year. They are celebrating their 5th Anniversary of their Emerald Society and have asked if they could march with us in the 2010 Parade. We were of course honored. We are holding a welcome celebration for them on Friday, March 12th, at Lizzie McNeill’s Irish Pub, 400 N. McClurg Ct., at 7:00. Our current Recording Secretary Megan Lyons is Chairman of this Celebration and has planned a first class welcome for this group. All Emerald Society members are encouraged to attend!  Entry to the welcome party is $30.00 which includes a 3 hour unlimited bar, well drinks and all beers, even Guinness, along with food (beef sandwiches, pizza, hot dogs, wings etc.) Discounted parking is available for ($6.00). Please come out and help us show these guys some Chicago Irish Hospitality. They are coming at their own expense to march with us! They are also very interested in trading any of our Police merchandise for their own.  Let’s show them how great the Emerald Society of Illinois is, by supporting this event.

Constable James Quinn

I am sure by now most of you have heard Constable James Quinn has been recognized by the Chicago Police Department as the first Officer to ever be killed in the Line of Duty. The Constable was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1814. He came to the United States in 1848 after fleeing the Great Hunger of Ireland. He was killed in the line of duty in 1853. His star was placed in the Chicago Police Department’s Honored Star Case on March 2nd, 2010. The founding father of the Emerald Society of Illinois, Dan Burke Sr., has spearheaded a campaign to honor the good Constables name and give him the recognition he so deserves, by organizing a float for the Constable in this years St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Mr. Burke Sr. has contacted numerous politicians on a state and local level along with prominent members of the Irish community to assist him in this endeavor. Mr. Burke is going to great lengths to see that the Constable is given the recognition he so deserves. The Emerald Society and its Board of Directors supports and thanks our founding father, Dan Burke Sr. for initiating this task. We also hope all Officers of Irish descent march together on Saturday, March 13th, in their uniforms and show their respect to Constable Quinn, now known as Chicago’s first “Fallen Hero” and fellow Irishman for making the ultimate sacrifice and also for establishing the foundation of Irish-Americans in Law Enforcement.

Chicago Police Memorial Foundation

I would be remise if I at this time did not thank the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation for all they do for Officers like Constable Quinn, who have been killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has, since the” Mission Beyond the Memorial” began in August of 2007 given $900,471.00 in assistance to families of Chicago Police Officers killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty . The Emerald Society’s Past Irishman of the Year and retired Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, Philip J. Cline is Executive Director of the Foundation. The Foundation is a not for profit organization who funded and now maintains the nation’s finest police memorial in Gold Star Families Memorial Park on our lakefront. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is going to set up a table at our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Members who have not already signed up for a pay-roll donation to the Foundation may that day. It is a wonderful foundation. I ask that we all contribute to this wonderful foundation as it allows us to ensure we continue to take care of our own.
