LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope everyone had a great Christmas. Hopefully everyone received what they wanted from Santa.

The Board of Directors would like to thank Rick Toolis for his service as President of the Emerald Society of Illinois for the past two years. Rick has been a board member for as long as I can remember. Rick’s dedication and commitment to the origination is truly an inspiration to all of our Board Members. I would like to thank all of the past presidents and board members who have worked so hard to make this organization what it is today.

The organization needs more support from the members! We need our members to become more involved in our activities. We also need members to support the organization by selling raffle tickets or dinner dance tickets and for various events throughout the year. Members can also purchase or sell advertisements in our annual ad book for the dinner dance or sell or purchase hole sponsorships at the golf outing.

If you know a past honoree ask them if they can support our events. I was also disappointed in the turkey raffle ticket sales. We only sold approximately 25% of our tickets. We would like to increase the dollar amount awarded for the scholarships but at the current rate of sales it is not possible. The bottom line is, we need to sell more tickets! We always have extra tickets for members to buy or sell to others.

We will be holding a cash raffle and the winning ticket will be drawn at the picnic on July 26th. Please see the raffle section inside the newsletter for more information.

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Moriarty

President

2007 Dinner Dance

The Annual Dinner Dance held at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza was well attended. The “Man of the Year” Award was shared by two great Chicagoans. They were chosen because of their commitment and dedication to the Chicago Police Memorial. The honors were presented to Scott Arney, CEO of the Chicago Patrolman’s Federal Credit Union and Joseph Power Jr., Attorney at Law. The “Police Officer of the Year” Award was shared by the following Chicago Police Officers: P.O. Mike Brosnan & Harold Bone of the 016th Dist, Sgt Matt Little Area 4 Gun Unit and Lt. The Justice Award was presented to the Honorable Joseph Birkett, DuPage County States Attorney. The award was presented for his commitment to aggressively prosecuting offenders in an objective manor. Joe also pays special attention to incidents involving law enforcement officers when the public and media jump to conclusions, believing officers used excessive force. Joe obtains the facts and allows the investigation to take its course. Joe does not speculate and reminds the public that officers do have the authority to use force in a lawful manor when necessary. The “President’s Award” was presented to the following members: P.O. Timothy Sheehan of the Arlington Heights Police Department & former Drum Major of the EMERALD SOCIETY Pipes & Drums of Chicago Police Department.
