History

Who Are We?

We are the Irish American Police Association

Americans of Irish descent have enjoyed a long and proud tradition of public service as Law Enforcement Officers. The histories of police agencies, small and large, chronicle the service and sacrifice of these Irish American men and women. The Emerald Society of Illinois was chartered in 1975 for the purpose of bringing together law enforcement officers of Irish descent to celebrate their heritage, support one another and promote good will & understanding within our communities. We invite you to join us as we continue to promote Irish heritage and traditions for the next generation of proud Law Enforcement Officers. We are the largest ethnic police organization in Illinois.

What Do We Offer?

Be a Part of a Tradition

As a member of the Emerald Society of Illinois, you will enjoy the opportunity to meet and socialize with members of your own Department as well as many other agencies from the surrounding area. Friendships and contacts that you forge could be invaluable in your Law Enforcement career. Emerald Society of Illinois hosts various events throughout the year including our annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Celebration. The annual Dinner & Awards celebration honors our Irish Person of the Year as well as recognizing incidents involving Law Enforcement Officers. Some of the other events include the annual Ribfest and Oktoberfest meetings.

Emerald Society of Illinois awards 4 annual scholarships to children and grandchildren of our members at the November Turkey Raffle meeting. Members who are in good standing for 4 consecutive years are eligible to participate in the scholarship drawing. Emerald Society of Illinois has awarded over 125 scholarships over the past 25 years. This benefit has expanded from the original 4 scholarships to 9 scholarships in 2019 through several generous donations from Emerald Society of Illinois members and family members. Emerald Society of Illinois has organized several trips, over the years, to Ireland for members, their families, and friends.

As a member, you will have the opportunity to join the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society of Illinois -Chicago Police Department Band. The Band was formed in 1982 for the purpose of honoring fallen First Responders. The Band also plays at parades and benefits for first responders and their families. The Band is the finest Police Pipe Band in the Midwest. They lead Emerald Society of Illinois uniformed members, along with family members and guests from around the globe, at the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade. You have not lived until you march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, led by the Band. This is one of the rare times where the Police are applauded by the public. It is a must for the Bucket List.

Another benefit of membership is that you can open an account with the Chicago Patrolman’s Federal Credit Union. Just mention you are a member when you are signing up.

The Emerald Society of Illinois is a proud member of the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies (NCLEES) whose mission is to preserve the legacy of the accomplishments of the Irish in public safety. NCLEES sponsored the initial Memorial March in May 1995. The Memorial March has become the signature event during Police Week in Washington D.C. honoring Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. NCLEES is made up of over 70 Emerald Societies throughout the United States and Europe.
